How vehicle donation works in Ohio
Ohio donors follow the same federal IRS framework as the rest of the country — Form 1098-C governs the deduction, Form 8283 reports it on the return, and the gross auction proceeds set the ceiling unless the recipient charity uses the vehicle in mission, makes material improvements, or transfers it to a needy individual. The Ohio-specific layer sits on top of that: the title transfer mechanics, the release of liability form, and any state income tax interaction.
- Sign the title in the seller section before pickup; never leave the buyer section blank.
- File a release of liability with the state DMV the same day the vehicle leaves your custody.
- Cancel insurance only after the title has transferred and the release of liability is on file.
- Request IRS Form 1098-C in writing if it has not arrived within 30 days of the disposition.
Recipients applying through a Ohio charity will need the same federal-style documentation as anywhere else — proof of income, employment, residence, and driver's license — plus any state-specific paperwork the program requests. Our document checklist covers the universal set.

Verifying any Ohio charity before you act
Inclusion in this directory means the organization appears in the IRS Exempt Organizations Master File at the time of our last data refresh. It does not constitute endorsement, and it does not guarantee the organization currently runs an active vehicle program — IRS status can be revoked, programs can be suspended, and small charities sometimes wind down without notice.
Always run the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search by EIN before donating, and request the most recent Form 1098-C example from the program. See our verification guide for the full five-tool process.
